Garden Heights builds interactive English novel-study workbooks for young readers — going beyond comprehension to explore the history, culture, and craft that bring each story to life.
Garden Heights is an online library of part-by-part interactive workbooks built around classic and modern children’s and young-adult novels. Students read the original book, then work through a matching online workbook that deepens their understanding of the story — its setting, its history, its characters, and the way it is written. Every workbook is auto-graded and gives instant feedback, so reading becomes active, not passive.
Our titles are organized into nine reading levels, from early chapter books (Grades 2–3) to high-school classics (Grades 11–12), so a reader can grow with us over many years.
Most study guides stop at “what happened.” Each Garden Heights workbook also explores the history, setting, cultural and religious context, the author’s life, and the literary elements and devices that make a story worth reading.
Like a garden, real learning begins with roots — deep, quiet, and slow to form, yet impossible to uproot once they take hold. Through literature, Garden Heights cultivates language, culture, and critical thinking: roots that hold firm below, heights that keep rising above.
Garden Heights is built on the philosophy of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) — integrating subject knowledge with language development. Our framework adds one new C to the classic four:
Mastering subject knowledge.
Using language as a tool for learning — fluency over perfection.
Building thinking and reasoning skills.
Seeing through different perspectives.
Connection runs in two directions. From the story to the world: in every Part, the Knowledge Banks link a moment in the novel to the real science, history and culture behind it — not random fun facts, but a bridge from the story to the world. From the reader to other people: learning isn’t complete until you can explain it to someone else. Every workbook ends with Teach It, and our Platinum workbooks, beginning with Matilda, open and close each Part with a Big Question and give students questions to talk through with family, classmates and teachers.
Connection also means checking. Students learn to hold what they read up against the evidence — what the story actually says, what is interpretation, and what is missing — the reading skill that matters most when summaries and explanations are everywhere. For students who want more, the Honors course adds the Academic Reading Challenge, practicing SAT®- and TOEFL®-style reading inside the novel.
Every part follows the same four steps — Read, Connect, Check, Think.
Matilda is the first book that works this way in full. Garden Heights workbooks are opening to members soon.
Garden Heights serves students and families reading at home, and teachers running novel studies in the classroom. Teachers can also open printable, answer-keyed Workbook PDFs and print them straight from the page for their own class. See pricing for plan details.
